It is composed of two connected benzene rings, and this stable aromatic structure makes it difficult to break chemical bonds. In ordinary environments, microorganisms lack a natural enzyme system to directly decompose refined naphthalene, making it difficult to quickly convert it like they do when decomposing sugars and proteins. However, there are also "special players" in nature - certain microorganisms that have undergone long-term adaptation and evolution, such as specific bacteria and fungi, can secrete special oxidases, gradually breaking down the benzene ring structure of naphthalene and converting it into small molecule substances.

For example, in the surface layer of soil rich in oxygen, the microbial community is abundant, and the degradation rate of refined naphthalene is relatively fast. But in the bottom of oxygen deficient water bodies or deep soil, the lack of oxygen can limit the metabolic activity of microorganisms, slow down the degradation process of naphthalene, and even produce intermediate metabolites, accumulating potential pollution risks. In addition, temperature and pH value can also affect microbial activity. The temperature range of 25 ℃ -35 ℃ and neutral pH environment are most suitable for microbial growth and degradation activities. Excessive or insufficient temperature and extreme pH can inhibit the ability of microorganisms to decompose naphthalene.

Some bacteria belonging to the genus Pseudomonas can efficiently degrade naphthalene by secreting naphthalene dioxygenase, which initiates the process of naphthalene decomposition; Some fungi, such as white rot fungi, can produce special extracellular enzymes that oxidize and decompose naphthalene under a wide range of environmental conditions. When the number of these advantageous microorganisms is sufficient in the environment, the degradation rate of naphthalene is significantly accelerated.
